A lot of us don’t let ourselves be up in the WILD UNRULY CREATIVE FLOW STATE unless we have a plan.

Unless we can see the end before we begin.

Unless we can be certain that the idea/project/situation is gonna be good.

…gonna be worth the time, energy, money, etc.

but the real magic of creative flow states lives in our willingness to unclench the steering wheel for a sec. To proceed as if we don’t have all the answers and therefore let ourselves get lost in the emergent details…

This workshop is for those of us who need a lil PEP TALK ENERGY BOOST in the messy, wiggly “process for process sake” department. For people who are maybe a little annoyed by the phrase ‘go with the flow’ but also…wanna flow more.

Day One: meeting your creative guidance system, techniques for looking, ritual and play strategies for surfing the unexpected, sewing techniques, and time to sew together

Day Two: low-key cozy sewing circle, bring your projects, your questions, and everything that you’ve been marinating on during the week re: uncertainty and creative pivots - this is magic genius peer support hour

you’ll learn:

  • my approach to weathering uncertainty as an improvisational artist - aka the artist’s tools for when sh*t hits the fan and you need to scrap the plan and pivot

  • fun collaging and hand-sewing techniques for making a gorgeous improvised scrap tapestry.

  • tools for clarifying your tastes and intuition as a creative being

  • strategies that can be applied to art and daily life

  • spend time with fascinating strangers and sew together like we’re at sexy art summer camp

Scrap Bundles include fabric scraps and assorted baubles, trinkets, ribbons, ropes, and anything else I have laying around that needs to go in! Intuitive scrappy packing!

oh hiiii I’m Melissa, your resident advisor on art-making as uncertainty practice.

I’ve made a life out of creative pivots, and the principles I share in this workshop have helped me hone my intuition, move through blocks, and feel fully expressed as a creative being, regardless of the circumstances of the moment.

  • "do I need to be an expert sewist?"

    no you do not, however this IS a hand-sewing class, so some knowledge of working with a needle and thread is helpful, but also we’ll guide you through it. If you feel called to the thread arts but have little to no experience, come on in and we’ll get you set up!

  • "what exactly are we making?"

    great question - we’re making a handsewn scrap collage - aka a mini quilt/ a lil tapestry wall hanging/ an altar cloth. what you do with your scrap collage is up to you, but mostly what we are making is space for ourselves to be messy, less measured, more unplanned, and guided by our tender inner impulses, ya dig??

  • "what if I don't like the scraps I get in the mail?"

    you might not! lucky for you, you’ll learn my principles of surfing uncertainty which includes navigating sh*t you don’t like! part of the work is about strengthening your discernment muscle and really noticing what you like and don’t like. so we’ll consider it a win!
